Do you remember this jacket? I started it last June, almost 7 months ago. It was inspired by the 1913 futurist painting, “The Speeding Automobile”. The design was laid out, basted and then put in my “do between other projects pile”, the “d-bop” pile. It’s a place for projects that will have many hours of handwork, usually applique or beading. When there’s a bit of time available, I’ll pull out the current “d-bop pile” project and sew, no hurry, no deadline, just something to keep my fingers occupied.
Talking on the phone, watching TV, long meetings, some people doodle, I stitch. Eventually, even after many months, I get to the end. Finished! Then, … onto the next.
Your clothing is gorgeous, and I can tell that the quality of your work is wonderful. Where do you get your silks from? I’d like to make a jacket or two similar to yours, but cannot find much in the way of silk around here.
Thank you Linda! I’ve been collecting fabric for a long time, my studio is bursting! My good luck was to be born here in Portland, Oregon. We have fabulous fabric stores, starting with one of my favorites, Josephine’s [www.josephinesdrygoods.com]. When I travel, I try and stop in the local fabric stores. I have fabrics from NY, LA, San Francisco, Paris, Italy and of course, Japan. Many of my Japanese silks are from an online company, Ichiroya [www.ichiroya.com]. Their silks are sold by the bolt, each with enough fabric to make up one kimono. I also buy from Thai Silks [www.thaisilks.com] a Californian based silk importer. I’m doing my best to keep all silk companies in business.
