I have this idea for a dress, it has a 1950’s feel with a full skirt and a fitted top. And it’s pieced with lots of little geometric shapes. It’s light at the hem and darker towards the top.
So I’ve been piecing this cool textured navy kimono silk with a sparkly white one. My pattern is a large triangle with its top cut off [what is the name of that shape???]. I’ll need 16 of them for a full skirt.
I started at the bottom, working my way up; piecing, cutting, resewing, 16 times, until each block fits the pattern.
And you know what? I am having too much fun. Way, way, way too much fun.
I love the 50’s fitted silhouette. I want to see that dress when it’s finished!
I think the name of the shape is trapezoid.
A trapezoid! Thank you Deborah! But wait, there’s more; when I looked it up, I found that the actual shape I’m using is an “Isosceles Trapezoid”, “a trapezoid where the legs have equal length”. It’s a term used in architecture, where the doors or windows get narrower towards the top, like Egyptian temples. Now I know, the skirt of my dress will be made with 16 isosceles trapezoids. I love it!
