Piecing Coats

I’ve been on a piecing binge. Cutting my kimono silks apart and sewing them back together in new ways.

For example, this one started with a simple grid made with rectangles of deep rich colors.

By the way, please excuse the odd perspective. I photographed these on my floor as I stood next to them, trying to keep my feet, various chair legs and my shadow out of the picture.

I added squares of a light green silk. They’re basted in place right now, ready to be hand sewn. I like the way the different sizes gave them a dynamic look, as though they were moving forward and back.

Below, coat number two, showing the bottom edge. The piecing still in progress, little bits of orange pieced into the gray/ blue.

This is actually upside down, the darker part will be on the bottom, then the green, then the gray/ blue with the bits of orange.

Here is the bottom part, piecing complete, right side up.

Next up, the top half, the piecing for this section is just getting started.

I’ve been thinking sparks and fires and billowing smoke. There are so many fires out in the world right now. Reading about them and seeing photos and videos is scary and upsetting. This may be my way to digest and make sense of it all?
