If it snows here in Portland I don’t think, ‘The snow is so beautiful!.’
Instead I think, ‘Oh No!! Ice is coming!!!’
More often than not, if it does snow, it warms up just enough during the day to melt a bit, then freezes overnight. Then, the temperature hovers a degree or two above freezing, just enough so instead of more snow, we get rain. The rain lands on the frozen ice, freezes and adds another layer of ice on top of the snow.
The cycle repeats. The ice builds and builds and covers everything: roads, buildings, cars, plants, trees, whatever is outside.
Most everything stops. Events are cancelled, stores and restaurants are closed. You can’t walk or drive anywhere because it’s crazy slippery. You’re pretty much stuck inside.
Which is ok if your electricity isn’t cut off by a tree so full of ice that it topples over onto power lines.
Thank goodness, thank goodness, thank goodness, ours stayed on during this ice storm
Which meant nothing to these little birds in the rose bush, snuggled up against the house and out of the wind.
I hunkered down and lost myself in the warmth of my new appliqué project, unconsciously seeing if thinking it so could shift the temperature above freezing.

Maybe it worked??? It’s warmed up enough so everything is melting….

Glad you had lights and heat. We lost power twice. After too many power outages over the years, the beauty of the branches limned in ice is no longer a recompense for knowing it almost always equals a dark cold house. Winter can end any time now.
Cold dark houses are miserable! Trying to get anything done wearing long underwear, a parka, knitted hats and gloves is extremely difficult.
While wearing a headlamp, no less…
