Size-wise we’re all slightly different; arms, shoulders, waists, hips, you name it, we come in different proportions in every way. Which is good, because otherwise how would we tell each other apart? Sometimes everything fits and the jacket or vest leaves the booth with a happy customer, other times it needs a bit of adjusting. When I come home from a show, I usually spend a week or two altering.
This beaded vest was just a bit too small, so I’ve added in a panel at the sides. I’ll cover it with the same beads and no one will know it’s there.
Sleeves that are too long or short is very common. There is a standard spot where sleeves “should” end. But as with shape, we’re all different. Everyone has their own spot that feels right. Even a half inch can make a huge difference. The sleeves on this jacket needed a bit off the length.
Being able to pin the piece on the person who will be wearing it is the absolute best way to make sure the fit will be right. I pin at the show and then bring it home, alter, pack it in a box and send it off to its new home.
